Every winter, the same scene plays out in millions of Indian homes: a blower heater roaring in the corner, the air near the ceiling stifling, and everyone's feet still cold on the stone floor. The 40% saving radiant floors deliver isn't marketing arithmetic it comes from three specific inefficiencies that warm-air heating can't escape.
Heat rises. You don't live at the ceiling.
A convection heater works by making hot air, and hot air's first instinct is to leave you. It stratifies: 30 °C at the ceiling, 18 °C at ankle height. You're paying to heat the two metres of air above your head.
A heated floor inverts the gradient. The warmest layer of the room is the one your body actually touches, and temperature falls gently with height. Nothing is wasted on the ceiling.
Warm feet change what "warm enough" means
This is the part that surprises people. Human comfort tracks skin contact and radiant exchange far more than air temperature.
With warm floors underfoot, most people report full comfort with air 3–4 °C cooler than they'd demand from a blower.
Each degree you don't heat the air saves roughly 7–10% of energy input. Drop the setpoint from 26 °C to 23 °C because your feet are warm, and you've banked a 20–30% saving before any other factor counts.
No fan, no leaks, no re-heating
The remaining slice comes from mundane engineering:
- No fan running for hours (a blower's fan alone draws 30–50 W).
- Zoned control the SenseWarm thermostat heats the bathroom for the morning rush and the living room for the evening, instead of one appliance overheating one room while the rest stay cold.
- Thermal mass a heated slab keeps releasing warmth long after the element switches off. Duty cycles of 30–40% are typical once a room is at temperature.
The measured result
Across 214 metered ProWarm installations we surveyed in the 2025–26 season, homes that replaced blower or oil-column heaters as their primary heat source reported 31–42% lower winter electricity consumption for equivalent comfort hours with insulated systems clustering at the top of that range.
The single biggest variable? Insulation boards under the heater. We've written before about why the cheapest component in the system controls the most expensive number on the bill.
