Underfloor heating doesn't warm a room directly it warms your floor, and the floor warms everything else. Which makes the floor finish an active part of the heating system, not just a surface. Some materials pass warmth through eagerly; others resist it. Here's how the common Indian choices stack up.
Stone and tile: the naturals
Marble, granite, Kota stone and vitrified tile are the best conductors you can put over a heating system. They pull warmth up quickly, spread it evenly, and hold it well.
There's a satisfying irony here: the very materials that make Indian floors so brutally cold in January are the ones that respond best to heating. The same conductivity that steals heat from your feet delivers it back when the system runs.
- Vitrified tile excellent conduction, unlimited temperature tolerance, our most common installation.
- Marble and granite superb warmth and luxurious underfoot; allow extra heat-up time for thick slabs.
- Kota and sandstone very good, with a rustic charm that suits heritage homes.
Engineered wood: yes, with rules
Solid hardwood moves too much with temperature to sit over heating, but engineered wood a hardwood veneer over a plywood core is dimensionally stable and fully compatible, within limits:
- Keep the floor surface below 27 °C a floor-probe thermostat enforces this automatically.
- Choose boards 18 mm or thinner; thicker boards blunt the system's response.
- Let the boards acclimatise on site for 72 hours before fitting.
The 27 °C limit sounds restrictive until you stand on it. A wooden floor at 26 °C feels unmistakably, deliberately warm.
Laminate and LVT: the quiet achievers
Modern laminate and luxury vinyl are thinner than engineered wood and transmit heat well. Almost every major manufacturer now publishes an underfloor-heating approval look for the symbol on the pack, and keep surface temperature within their stated limit. Paired with our WarmFoil system, laminate gives the fastest wood-look warm floor available.
What to avoid
Thick carpet is the one genuine problem child: anything above 1.5 tog effectively wraps your heating system in a blanket. Bamboo and solid teak are also out beautiful materials, but they cup and gap over heat.
Designing the whole build-up
The finish is one layer of a stack that matters as a whole: insulation below, heater in the middle, finish on top. Get the stack right and any of the materials above will give you a floor the whole family migrates toward in winter.
